Begin at the Rural Heritage Museum and Back to a time when the pace was a bit slower and life centered around the farm, family, and community.  At the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum you will learn about our region's beginnings and history, and how our rural and agricultural heritage continue to play a role in Washington County today.  Located at the Agricultural Education Center in Boonsboro, Maryland, the Rural Heritage Museum is open weekends from April through mid-December, 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and available for group and school tours by appointment. There is no admission charge, but donations are gratefully accepted.  240-313-2839.

On to Antietam National Battlefield, site of “The Bloodiest One Day Battle in American History” in which 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The battle led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.  An authorized battlefield guide can be provided by Antietam Guide Service  (inquire in advance at the Visitor Center Gift Shop).  Park is open from sunrise to sunset.  301-432-4321.

Looking for an alternative dining experience to share with family or friends?  Antietam Ironworks now partners with chef and instructor Maria Canora for hands-on cooking course with a seated dinner. Maria has been immersed in Tuscan cooking all her life. While living in and attending school in Italy, she exposed herself to the fine dining of the area. While cooking authentic cuisine from the Tuscan region of Italy, you will listen to Italian music, cook, eat, drink, and love life through food.  Three sessions are currently being offered.  Classes are designed for all skill levels and are fun, relaxed, and informative.  Dates offered are August 16th and on September 6th, 2008. After each session enjoy your creation and dine alfresco along the banks of the Antietam Creek.  They will provide all the materials needed for the classes. Call to secure your spot. For additional information about cost and time, call Antietam Ironworks at 301.432.2250.
